<!-- <img src="http://swfloridahomesrighthere.net/assets/2008/5/14/lrelogo.jpg" class="floatright"> -->
Bonita Springs is conveniently located south of Fort Myers and north of Naples along Southwest Florida’s beautiful Gulf coast. This fabulous up and coming city had its humble beginnings as a small settlement named Survey, founded by agriculturist Braxton B. Coomer in the late 19th century. Throughout its first decade, Survey remained a remote place situated on lush, untamed land, which attracted many visiting hunters and fishermen to the region, but not many residents. When J. Henry Ragsdale purchased 2,400 acres of land around Survey in 1912, he changed the name of the town to Bonita Springs, hoping the more appealing name would attract people to the area. Ragsdale’s undertaking brought a railroad extension and a highway system to Bonita Springs, which jumpstarted the community’s growth.

Today Bonita Springs has a growing population of around 38,000 people. Many new residents of Bonita Springs come to the area as visitors, but quickly fall in love with the beauty, charm, and laid back “Old Florida” style of the city, and dream of owning a home here. Bonita Springs offers a small town atmosphere combined with big town conveniences, such as shopping centers, an array of dining experiences, movie theaters, performance arts venues and cultural attractions. But of course, the beaches are the stars of the show, featuring soft white sand, seashells, sea breezes and gorgeous sunsets. Those who love to play in the sun will love Bonita Springs for its variety of outdoor recreation possibilities; Bonita Springs allows saltwater and freshwater boating and fishing, golf, tennis, walking and bike paths. Although Florida has a reputation as a haven for empty nesters, the region is attractive to people of all ages. Families with young children can easily feel right at home in Bonita Springs; residents of the city have access to 7 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 high schools. Nearby Fort Myers is home to the two higher education centers, Edison College and the Florida Gulf Coast University.

a Tropical Landscape

            Southwest Florida has been attracting visitors and residents for over 100 years. The region is famous for its soothing tropical landscape and ideal climate with Gulf breezes that beckon you to lounge beachside or take a stroll at the water’s edge. A literal playground for outdoor enthusiasts, Southwest Florida offers year-round recreation for every fanatic; including walking, jogging, and bike paths, as well as miles and miles of coastline that are open to swimming, boating, scuba diving, shell searching and fishing. Golf lovers of all skill levels can choose from well over 100 beautifully designed courses in Southwest Florida; including private, semi-private and public courses, many of which are situated in lush tropical settings, or overlook lakes, rivers and the Gulf. And for the most adventurous outdoorsman, Southwest Florida is directly north of the nation’s only sub-tropical wilderness—the Everglades. Contrary to what many think, the Everglades is not just a big swamp full of snakes and alligators; the Everglades is a rare, untouched habitat that is home to many forms of wildlife in and out of the water. The Everglades attracts nature lovers of all ages, and offers opportunities for fishing, camping, bird watching, and boating of all sorts.
In addition to its perfect climate, lush tropical environment, and recreation for thrill seekers and beach loungers alike, Southwest Florida’s charm lies in its various cities, towns, and villages. Southwest Florida’s regional boundaries are roughly south of the Tampa Bay area, west of Lake Okeechobee, and mostly north of the Everglades. The area is comprised of 5 coastal counties, and has many distinct and friendly communities, including:

•	Sanibel & Captiva Island
•	Sarasota
•	Upper Captiva Island

Residents of Southwest Florida enjoy being part of smaller, tight knit communities within beautiful island, beachfront, or tropical inland settings. The largest city within Southwest Florida is Cape Coral, with a population of just over 150,000. Each city or town in Southwest Florida has its own commercial center with unique shopping and restaurants, as well as exciting attractions, theaters, parks and public recreation facilities. And when the bright lights of the big city beckons, Cape Coral (located at the region’s center) is only 130 miles south of Tampa, 170 miles northwest of Miami, and 150 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale.
In recent years, more and more people have discovered the beauty and excitement that Southwest Florida has to offer. For those who are interested in relocating to Southwest Florida, the real estate market is brimming with housing opportunities; including condominiums, townhouses, single family homes, and even opportunities for custom building—all in a variety of settings.
