Bonita Springs, FL
Bonita Springs is conveniently located south of Fort Myers and north of Naples along Southwest Florida’s beautiful Gulf coast. This fabulous up and coming city had its humble beginnings as a small settlement named Survey, founded by agriculturist Braxton B. Coomer in the late 19th century. Throughout its first decade, Survey remained a remote place situated on lush, untamed land, which attracted many visiting hunters and fishermen to the region, but not many residents. When J. Henry Ragsdale purchased 2,400 acres of land around Survey in 1912, he changed the name of the town to Bonita Springs, hoping the more appealing name would attract people to the area. Ragsdale’s undertaking brought a railroad extension and a highway system to Bonita Springs, which jumpstarted the community’s growth.
Today Bonita Springs has a growing population of around 38,000 people. Many new residents of Bonita Springs come to the area as visitors, but quickly fall in love with the beauty, charm, and laid back “Old Florida” style of the city, and dream of owning a home here. Bonita Springs offers a small town atmosphere combined with big town conveniences, such as shopping centers, an array of dining experiences, movie theaters, performance arts venues and cultural attractions. But of course, the beaches are the stars of the show, featuring soft white sand, seashells, sea breezes and gorgeous sunsets. Those who love to play in the sun will love Bonita Springs for its variety of outdoor recreation possibilities; Bonita Springs allows saltwater and freshwater boating and fishing, golf, tennis, walking and bike paths. Although Florida has a reputation as a haven for empty nesters, the region is attractive to people of all ages. Families with young children can easily feel right at home in Bonita Springs; residents of the city have access to 7 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 high schools. Nearby Fort Myers is home to the two higher education centers, Edison College and the Florida Gulf Coast University.
